What a great first week of school! I have really enjoyed the students in physical science. I have had some real creative answers as we have discussed elements, compounds, and mixtures this week. It is always good when you can laugh with your class, and on occasion at them.
This week we will be concluding our class study of elements, compounds, and mixtures and preparing for our first unit quiz. To help the students prepare I will be assigning critical thinking questions for them to answer in class, and completing another activity to help us differentiate between the three. We will have our lab experience for elements, compounds, and mixtures next week. In fact, the way it is looking, we will spend much of the next week in the lab. Please have students bring in their supplies for the upcoming lab this week, and their signed lab safety sheets. After elements, compounds, and mixtures comes chemical v. physical changes, which blends in well with elements, compounds, and mixtures. The schedule including graded assignments is typed below.
Parents, if you ever have any questions, comments, concerns, or ideas, please reach out to me. I love having parents share their work experience in our classroom to make the connections more real for the students. Thanks for all you do.
Monday - critical thinking questions for elements, compounds, mixtures; complete storyboard for separating compounds experiment; discuss TC: elements, compounds, mixtures
Tuesday - TC: Elements, Compounds, Mixtures (graded); poster activity to differentiate between elements, compounds, mixtures; demonstrate Tyndall Effect
Wednesday - discuss physical v. chemical changes; begin Notes: Physical v. Chemical Change; demonstrations of chemical and physical changes
Thursday - Quiz: Elements, Compounds, Mixtures (graded); complete Notes: Physical v. Chemical Change; storyboard chemical reactions labs
Friday - discuss the solar eclipse
Standards This Week:
CLE3202.1.5 Evaluate pure substances and mixtures.
->3202.1.6 Identify substances as homogeneous or heterogeneous mixtures.
->3202.1.7 Construct an experiment to separate the components of a mixture.
CLE3202.1.4 Investigate chemical and physical changes.
What I want your child to learn:
1. How to distinguish between elements, compounds, and mixtures in an everyday setting.
2. Classify substances as elements, compounds, and types of mixtures based on their observable characteristics.
3. How to create their own tests to determine the identity (element, compound, mixture) of an unknown substance.
4. What the differences between physical and chemical reactions are.
4. How they can make money knowing this information, so you can retire without kids in living in the basement (the ultimate foundation of all of my lessons).
FINAL NOTES:
Laptops will be issued in the near future, you may pay the insurance by visiting: https://www.localevelevents.com/events/details/3357
A message from BARTLETT CITY SCHOOLS
Parents,
On Monday, August 21, 2017, the moon will pass between the earth and the sun for the first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse since 1918. Millions of Americans in 12 states will be able to watch this solar spectacle that will turn day into night for a couple of minutes. Tennessee is among the 12 states that have been declared to be the best place to experience this rare phenomenon.
Bartlett City Schools is planning for its students to participate in this event. BCS has purchased and will supply solar eclipse viewing glasses for students. Permission slips will be coming home next week. Parents of students in grades K-8 must sign and return all forms no later than Thursday, August 17, 2017. If your student is in grades 9-12 you will only need to send a form back if you DO NOT want your child to participate.
